A broken autoclave is an immediate crisis for any hospital, theater, or KMLTTB-compliant laboratory. The moment your sterilizer stops reaching the required 121°C or 134°C, your operations halt, instruments pile up, and you risk failing your next regulatory inspection.

At Medwise Technical Consulting, we repair tabletop, vertical, and large horizontal autoclaves weekly across Kisumu, Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, and Kakamega.

If your machine is throwing error codes, leaking steam, or failing to heat up, here are the most common causes and how our engineering team fixes them.

1. Autoclave Not Heating Up / Blown Elements

This is the most frequent complaint we receive from clinics and labs. You turn on the machine, but the water remains cold or lukewarm.

  • The Cause: Burned-out heating elements caused by scaling (hard water buildup), low water levels running dry, or electrical power surges.
  • The Medwise Fix: Our engineers test the element's resistance using a digital multimeter. We replace burned elements with high-quality, OEM-spec spares and install voltage protectors to shield your machine from local power fluctuations.

2. Pressure Leaks (Steam Escaping the Door)

If your autoclave is running but cannot build up enough pressure to start the sterilization countdown, look closely at the door.

  • The Cause: A worn, cracked, or hardened silicon door gasket (seal). Over time, high heat degrades the rubber, letting steam escape.
  • The Medwise Fix: We stock replacement door seals for top brands. We also inspect and calibrate the door locking mechanism to ensure an airtight lock.

3. Clogged Valves and Drainage Lines

If the sterilization cycle finishes but your instruments come out soaking wet, or if the water refuses to drain, you have a blockage.

  • The Cause: Debris, biological residue, or mineral deposits blocking the air release valve, safety valve, or drain lines.
  • The Medwise Fix: We completely flush the internal hydraulic lines, disassemble and clean the solenoid valves, and replace faulty safety release valves to prevent dangerous pressure over-accumulation.

4. Error Codes and PCB Board Malfunctions

Modern digital autoclaves (like Class B autoclaves used in dental clinics and theaters) will abort cycles and display errors like "Error 01", "Low Vacuum", or "Temp Sensor Failure".

  • The Cause: Faulty temperature sensors (PT100), pressure transducers, or burnt components on the main Printed Circuit Board (PCB).
  • The Medwise Fix: Instead of making you buy an expensive new motherboard, our biomedical electronics team does component-level PCB troubleshooting and micro-soldering to fix the board at a fraction of the cost.

5. Blackened or Rusting Chamber (Hard Water Damage)

Using regular tap water or poorly filtered water will quickly ruin your autoclave's stainless steel chamber.

  • The Cause: Mineral deposits forming a thick crust over the sensor probes and heating elements, confusing the machine's computer.
  • The Medwise Fix: We perform deep chemical descaling of the chamber and give your staff practical training on why distilled or deionized water is mandatory for autoclaves.

Autoclave Brands We Service Daily in Kenya

Our engineering team has specialized diagnostic tools and spare parts for all major brands found in Kenyan facilities, including:

  • Tuttnauer (Tabletop & Hospital series)
  • Memmert (Sterilizers & Ovens)
  • Runyes / Youjoy (Dental Class B autoclaves)
  • Hirayama / Alp (Vertical laboratory autoclaves)
  • Standard Chinese stainless steel vertical autoclaves (24L, 50L, 75L, 100L)

Fast Emergency Repairs Across Kenya: Our Process

Don't let a broken sterilizer halt your operations or cause you to fail a KMLTTB or KMPDC audit. Medwise provides rapid-response onsite engineering.

  1. Diagnosis: We check elements, sensors, valves, and electronics.
  2. SLA Maintenance: We offer Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) contracts to check your seals and calibrate your pressure gauges before they fail.
  3. Validation: Every autoclave we repair comes with a Calibration & Validation Certificate showing it accurately hits and holds sterilization parameters.
