Why Price Varies So Much: 5 Things You Must Check Before You Buy
A cheap analyzer can become the most expensive if you ignore this:
1. Open vs Closed Reagent System
Mindray BC-20s and Zybio Z3 are open - you can use third-party reagents (KES 6,500 / set). Sysmex and some 5-part Mindray are closed - you MUST buy original reagents (KES 18,000 - 28,000 / set). Over 1 year, reagent cost is more than the machine price.
2. New vs Refurbished (Reconditioned)
Refurbished is not bad. A refurbished Mindray BC-30s from Medwise comes with 6 months warranty, new tubing, new O-rings, calibrated and QC passed. It will serve you 5+ years. But don't buy a refurbished machine that has no service sticker or QC print. That's a scrap.
3. Does Price Include KMLTTB Documents?
KMLTTB now asks for equipment validation certificate, calibration certificate and service agreement. Some cheap suppliers dump the machine and disappear. Medwise gives you all audit papers on delivery.
4. After-Sales Service Cost
Ask the supplier: "Who will service it after 3 months when WBC clog starts?" If they don't have a biomedical engineer in Kisumu, Nairobi, Mombasa, you will pay KES 15,000 for transport alone per service. We offer service contracts from KES 8,500/quarter.
5. Throughput & Hidden Features
Does it have autoloader? How many samples per hour? BC-20s is 40T/H, BC-5380 is 60T/H with autoloader. For a busy Level 4, slow speed means long queues.
Which Hematology Analyzer Should You Buy for Your Lab in Kenya?
If you are starting a small lab with budget under KES 600k:
Buy Zybio Z3 or Mindray BC-20s new, or BC-30s refurbished. Low reagent cost, easy to maintain, KMLTTB approved. This is what 70% of new labs in Kenya buy.
If you run a Level 4 hospital or busy lab with >80 samples/day:
Go for 5-part Mindray BC-5150 or Zybio Z5. Doctors now demand 5-part diff (Neuts, Lymphs, Mono, Eos, Baso). With NHIF/SHA claims, 5-part justifies higher test price (KES 500-700 vs 300 for 3-part).
If you want long-term reliability and have budget:
Sysmex XP-300 is a tank. It rarely clogs, but spares are expensive. Good for labs far from major towns like Lodwar, Garissa, where you need minimal breakdown.
The Real Cost No One Tells You: Cost Per Test
Don't just look at machine price. Calculate cost per test:
Example for 3-Part in Nairobi:
- Reagent set (Diluent 20L + Lyse 500ml + Cleaner): KES 6,500 - runs ∼300 tests = KES 22 per test
- Controls & Calibrator: KES 3 per test
- Service PPM amortized: KES 5 per test
- Total: ~ KES 30 per test. You charge KES 300-400. Profit KES 270.
If you buy closed system where reagent is KES 22,000 for 200 tests = KES 110 per test. Your profit drops.
We do this calculation FREE for clients before they buy.

Frequently Asked Questions on Price
